KATC reporter linked to Jindal’s campaign coffers

Chris_WeltyKATC Reporter Chris Welty has been moonlighting as a campaign worker for Gov. Bobby Jindal’s reelection bid.

A search of Jindal’s campaign finance reports through the Louisiana Ethics Administration website shows that Welty has been paid almost $2,000 from Jindal’s 2011 gubernatorial campaign while working as a part-time news reporter for KATC.

Widely accepted as the media’s go-to for ethics guidance, the SPJ Code of Ethics directs journalists to “avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived ... shun secondary employment, political involvement, public office, and service in community organizations if they compromise journalistic integrity ... Disclose unavoidable conflicts.”

KATC General Manager and President Andrew Shenkan says the station was made aware of Welty’s second job sometime after Welty received his last payment from Jindal on Sept. 30. Welty has since severed his employment ties to Jindal’s reelection bid.

“We have a very strict policy on potential conflicts of interest, particularly with our information gathering employees,” Shenkan says. “We dealt with it appropriately as established by our policies. There is no relationship that I’m aware of at the present time.”

The campaign finance documents state that Welty, a UL Lafayette mass communication student, also worked for Jindal’s first election in 2007 while still in high school.

“If this is true, clearly this is an avoidable conflict,” says Dr. Robert Buckman, a UL journalism professor who served for 15 years on the Society of Professional Journalists’ Ethics Committee. “He was clearly violating the code of ethics by accepting money from a politician while also working for a news medium. That’s a serious ethical no-no. He should have disclosed it.”

Welty declined comment.

Welty is to be applauded. He has, and is, behaving in true Jindal apprentice mode while he masquerades as an objective newsman. No wonder KATC is regarded and joke. This falls right in line with Rob Perillo frightening the bejesus out of people with his melodramatic weather reports.

Would KATC's use of Welty, a Jindal campaign employee, to cover Jindal and other political news be considered an "in kind" campaign donation?

Has the thought occurred to anyone that this is SIMPLY a case of a college student working their ass off at two jobs to pay their bills? College tuition in itself is over $2,000. Think about that.

It's unethical. he can get a part time job at mcdonalds. it's a conflict of interest that was avoidable. And to make nearly $1,000 per month, he must have been doing more than just making a few phone calls and passing out flyers.

Also, where does anyone at theIND get off commenting on anyone else's journalistic standards?

Chris Welty is a COLLEGE student. He is not a professional reporter yet. He worked for Jindal in high school. He probably did not realize that working for Jindal and reporting was against the ethics code. This was clearly a huge misunderstanding. Everyone makes mistakes and no one can say they didn't make mistakes early in their career. There are much more important things going on in this world than picking on a college kid. Shame on anyone who is wasting their time to tear down this hard working young man

Who cares what a reporter is doing at KSLA, let the Shreveport news mediums handle that story.

Who in their right mind doesn't know that there is a conflict of interest in this situation? Regardless if he is still a college student working as a reporter or a professional reporter, he is still ON AIR at KATC and shouldn't have his pockets being filled with campaign money. If you're someone who is supposed to report fair and unbiased news, you shouldn't be involved in a politicians campaign, ESPECIALLY a campaign as big as the gubernatorial race. You can no longer be impartial. I look forward to hearing about what races Mr. Welty will be covering tomorrow because I'm pretty sure KATC did nothing about this situation.

Have you ever known anyone who has worked at KLFY? I mean known them well enough that they would confide in you the way KLFY "really is."
Are you aware there was a time -- for a very long time -- that working there was nothing more than working at a "sweatshop." Are you aware how unethically Mr. Perillo was treated by his bosses, worked like a slave? Are you aware of how unethical it was until the Department of Labor/Wage and Hour had to come in and straighten out the mess of KLFY not paying its employees for working many hours of overtime WITHOUT being paid?
Such practices were commonplace until a certain person was demoted, stripped of her powers and relegated to a corner office (until she quit), after USING her employees to make HER look good for many, many years?
If you are looking at KLFY now, you are looking at several people, who, if they had ever been given the chance, would have high-tailed it out of there in two twitches of a nutria's rear end. Problem is, no other company wanted (or wants) them and, consequently, they are stuck there, miserable.
Until you KNOW what you are talking about, it's best to remain mum.
There was nothing "underhanded" about the "way" KATC hired Mr. Perillo. His contract was up and, in sports terms, he was a "free agent." Since when is a person required/obligated to remain with a particular company beyoond the end of a contract?
This is America, for God's sake. You think YOU should determine what Mr. Perillo should have done with his life? Who in the name of God are you to even THINK that you have such say-so over another person's life or career.
If you have "refused" to watch KATC's news casts for the last eight years, it is your loss. KATC is the only local affiliate that is anywhere close to the quality and substance of an industry-standard news cast. But, W P K, I don't expect someone of such limited intelligence -- not to mention taste --to know any better.

Since when is it unethical for someone who worked their butt off to get paid for a service? He is a freaking COLLEGE STUDENT! And if some of you remember what it was like to go to college and have a career then you would understand. And for crying out loud, what difference is 2,000 dollars going to make when buying a car of that value? NONE WHAT SO EVER. It is a terrible shame that people are trying to ruin a young mans career over this petty crap. He was simply working a second job to help pay some bills. Not once did his second job interfere with his reporting on KATC!

It's a shame there's no sense of true journalism in Lafayette.. at least THE IND comes close. Probably the brightest journalist in town is in charge of editorial content. Unfortunately, there's no daily source for interesting content. The paper gets thinner and local reporters are replaced with cheap "first job, just above intern" multimedia "news gather-ers.". In this case, an eager beaver is trying to get his feet wet in many places to make a name for himself. He knew he shouldn't have, but whatelse should we expect? Quality journalism flew the coop from KLFY and KATC years ago. Both are small market "sweatshops" where the wealthy end is $24/year ( except the faces). It's no picnic at either station- a hog riding, bottle- lovin operation or the used car salesman with his dingy puppet and decision- making based off the book "Good to Great" where everyone's replaceable (remember Julie Kelley). The show goes on... And so do our lives.

When people can't recognize a conflict of interest between the media and political interests then either they are too partisan to understand or have no faith in the media...either case is a bad sign for democratic government.

What concerns me more than his judgement to work for a campaign while working as a reporter is his judgement as a college student to campaign for Bobby Jindal. If he needs the extra money to pay his tuition, as some on this blog have suggested, he can thank his secondary employer considering what Jindal and his crew have tried to do to higher eduction in this state.

We're about to enter the second term of a Governor who wanted to fundraise for national office more than lead our state...in his first term! God help us these next four years when he doesn't have to worry about reelection and it's ALL gonna be about Bobby.

Journalism my endangered butt. They publish an exposé on this small-spud newbee's conflict of interest while the big fish go unnoticed on these pages.

Why does not THE IND expose how certain politicians in this berg have a certain radio conglomerate in their back pocket... "wrapped around their finger" as one person who had an inside seat for a short while explained it to me.

You know, those folks who are always inviting us to "join the conversation," or "make our voices heard" so we can be belittled, ridiculed, and /or our state of mental health analyzed...

Big deal...I bet if this had been a reporter and working on a Democrat's campaign, we would have heard NOTHING about it in The Ind (or anywhere else for that matter). In the mainstream liberal media you regularly see people work in Democrat's administrations/campaigns, go work as a news reporter, and then a few years later are right back working in another Democrat's administration/campaign all the while maintaining that they are unbiased in their reporting (which at times is so full of liberal spin you would have to be brain dead not to notice). That "Code of Ethics" the UL professor talked about for journalists is regularly violated and is also crap. It has been discovered often enough that these same "unbiased" reporters have given campaign contributions (the VAST majority of which is to Democratic campaigns or liberal causes) and these same "unbiased" reporters get little more than a slap on the wrist for breaking these rules.

Typical double standard!!

It amazes me every single time I manage to force myself to read comments here. ANYTHING that is exposed by the IND is automatically denounced. In this case he fact is that wrong remains wrong. Chris went against the ethics he agreed to as a journalist. PERIOD. You guys can nitpick, attention shift, and so forth all you want, but he shouldn't have done it.

We don't need to hear about someone else in Shreveport for Welty to be guilty of a conflict of interest. People around here need to start looking at the situation 'as is' and of itself, and quit trying to excuse it or tie it into something else, or by bringing Obama into it for no reason whatsoever. That's why everything is corrupt -- no one is interested in solving anything, just blameshifting and trying to excuse it by ridiculous comparisons.

KATC is a joke, I agree. And since they are shown to allow conflicts of interests, I would be interested to see how much money, or what ties, if any, they have to Edwin Edwards, since they continually lobby for his pardon and cover everything he does. If he sneezes, KATC posts a picture of it.

To everyone else: Cherry got a dui -- get over it. Her actions however many months ago, doesn't automatically allow you to erase reality and rewrite it as fiction. A fact remains a fact, regardless of if you like the woman or not. In this case, and in many others, the IND gave you a fact. You can agree with the delivery, that's up to you, but griping about it won't change it's nature. It's still true.

I know that some of you who comment here are well educated and have good jobs that allow you to sit around in the afternoon and make your comments on every blog or news site that you can. I would only guess that this is so that your friends will think you’re cool. Others here are college students trapped in the dorm (or at mommies house) dreaming up ideas of how to work the system so you never have to grow up and get a job. Tonight you can tell the blind date that your mother set you up on, that you blogged today. But before you comment on someone why don’t you find out about the person. The truth is here is a young man under 21 who is going to school and who believes in something besides video games and Jackass. He has not influenced an election. We could all look at the others in the media and where they have contributed money to, or we could listen to the stories they choose to do and see what their affiliations are. This all proves why I love free speech. Anyone can say whatever they would like, which helps the sane know who to watch out for.
