La. judges building their case for pay raise

The Advocate reported that the Legislature could be asked to raise judicial salaries next year.

According to the newspaper, the Judicial Compensation Commission has hired noted economist Loren Scott to update a report he did last year. In comparing how the state’s judges stack up against others in the region and nation, Scott found Louisiana’s judges make less (though the story did not indicate the extent of the gap). The newspaper noted that while the commission did not submit a recommendation to the Legislature last year because of the state budget woes, commission chairman Joe Toomy, a former state representative, said judges have received pay raises in eight of the last eleven years.

Louisiana’s annual base pay is $136,544 for state district court judges, $142,447 for appeals court judges and $149,572 for Supreme Court justices, the newspaper reported.

Why do they deserve another raise? Our state doesn't have the money. They work limited days and limited hours. That's why it takes so long to go through the legal system. When they work longer and harder, then raises should be considered. And what does it matter whom they are compared to? There doesn't seem to be a shortage or people willing to run for the judgeships. It's a trade off for the better hours.

Judges get paid an income, lots of time off, and great insurance and retirement. As I remember, they also receive a $5000. 00 benefit for travelling maybe, from one court to another. I beleive there are some other perks in there also in the form of $. And since there is SO much that goes before "Mediation" judges hear less and less cases. I don't think the economy of Louisiana can support another income increase for judges. There are thousands and thousands employed by the court system. Its not like they're having to live a hard life on those salaries....

If the judges don't believe that their salaries "stack up" to other states', then I suggest they pack their bags and leave Louisiana and move to one of the other states and secure a judgeship there. This is absurd that they would even consider bringing this issue up with the economy in chaos.

Noted economist Laren Scott has always been a pimp for the politico's and the power elite in Louisiana. Why should his reports be regarded as gospel?
