Party on, Wayne

                                        Wayne Ditch

Our hearts are heavy to report that Wayne Ditch, a fixture and tremendous force on Lafayette's art scene, has passed away.

Details are still coming in but what we know now is that Ditch passed away from throat cancer Monday. He was receiving treatment in New Orleans, the other city he was lucky enough to call home. Ditch kept a lot of the information about his illness and treatments private.

He spent several decades working as a surrealist painter and sketcher. Ditch was also looked upon as a very talented art restorationist and was called upon by both public and private collectors to help many an old painting look lively again. After Hurricane Katrina, Ditch was able to restore paintings that had been submerged for weeks.

We will certainly write more on this as funeral arrangements are made public. There is talk — so far only that — of holding a benefit to allay some of the funerary costs to his family and we will post about that, too.

Ditch could always be counted on to attend fellow artists' shows and openings, to inspire and encourage. He was readily found out mingling and enjoying himself and we know that in his afterlife the party just got more fun. Our hearts are with Ditch's family and many, many friends.

Wayne Ditch was 57 years old.

I have known Wayne for 40 years, and I know he and his art will be missed. I am fortunate to own one of his pieces of work and will forever treasure it.

Recently I began looking up people I knew in high school on Facebook to see what has been going on in their lives. I found Wayne Ditch's name and remembered him as a friend at LHS. We were in an art class together and he was a dear. I remember his sister Jane as well. Several days ago I had decided to contact him and even last night I had taken a look at his website again, but a phone call had distracted me and I never got back to my computer. It was still on his website when I went to sleep last night. Today, a niece of mine had this link posted on FB and I was totally shocked. I knew him so long ago, but every memory I have of him was a good one. I'm only so sorry that I didn't contact him when I first meant to. This is such a sad lesson to learn. My prayers go out to his family at this sad hour.

Wayne and his sister Jayne were classmates of mine. He was an artist compadre'. He'd call my mom and just talk to her, about art and antique paintings. We were in contact on FB and thru texting. Always just missing each other in Lafayette or New Orleans. I am sure he will always be a part of the tribe of artists from Lafayette. His work will long be remembered for its uniqueness. You just never know till it's too late. Prayers to his family.

I knew Wayne and his sister since elementary school. He used to call my mom and talk about art and restorations. We would talk on FB and text as he was an artist compadre'. Somehow missing each others calls between Lafayette and New Orleans. He was a unique artist and presence in the community. His art lives on so that we may all enjoy the gift he gave all of us; but definately leaves an empty space in the tribe of artists in Lafayette. Prayers to his family. Miss you "W".

I can't exactly remember when I would have first known Wayne Ditch, probably Laf. Elem, but maybe even Myrtle Place? Just not sure, but by high school, I remember him as being a sweet, quiet presence marching to the beat of his own drummer. I didn't know him well, didn't have time to, but as an adult, I knew he was an artist, so any time his name came up, I took notice. I'd see him at a festival or I'd see an article on him or I'd see some of his work displayed somewhere. He seemed to be so satisfied, at peace, happy with his life. I hope that assumption was correct. I too am sorry for missed opportunities. I wish I would have taken time to speak to him, to tell him how I enjoyed his talent. He's left the world a better place & his art, his expertise on the restorations he did will be a testament to his talent. I hope his family & those who loved him will take comfort in knowing he touched many lives & made them better.

I remember Wayne Ditch from Lafayette High School and also USL. I was an English major, but i was often in the art building visiting friends. I was sad to hear of his death as on this past October 28th, i was in Carpe Diem coffee cafe with friends chatting on my birthday. I had been admiring the lovely mural on the wall and everyone said, "Oh! That was done by Wayne Ditch!" His art will live on after him.

Even in Colorado, where I live now, word has reached us of Wayne's death. I have only known him over the last ten years but agree with the other comments.

Additionally one cannot think of the Lafayette Art Walk without seeing Wayne's face and enjoying his conversation and company.
A gentleman, a gentle man, and an artist.

As I sit reading this sad news I look above on the wall and see two drawings from Wayne's work back in 1984. I will cherish always. We have lost another one of the tribe.

I'm looking at one of Wayne's paintings now. He was an inspiration. He exuded a calmness on his whole family and will be missed very much.
