LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — James Willis, who helped lead the University of Louisiana at Lafayette to the Sun Belt Conference title last season as defensive coordinator, has resigned his position to accept a coaching position at another university.

Coach Mark Hudspeth announced the resignation Wednesday night. He says a search for Willis' replacement will begin immediately.

In his lone season with the teams, Willis oversaw a young defense that improved from eighth in the Sun Belt in total defense in 2012 to third in 2013.
