The hunt was on for another FUN-raiser at the Heymann Performing Arts Center. But I didn't recognize the camouflaged center, the decorative items gleaming with a wildlife motif. Members of the Evangeline Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America look forward to polishing their boots for this event each year especially when Cajun rock band, L'Ange'lus, performs. "Ca C'est Bon!" It was down home, good fun for all the hunters and fishermen or fisherwomen who showed their support for the local Boy Scout Council. Everything from prints by award-winning wildlife artist Tony Bernard to an Arctic Cat ATV donated by Shetler-Corley ATV of Crowley and several hunting and fishing trips were high on bidders' lists. Party Girl loves to hunt, too ' for bargains at my favorite boutiques. Don Claxton of Petroleum Engineers and Jimmy King of Rig Oil Tools co-chaired the annual fund raiser ' The Sportsman's Dinner and Auction. Jim Rees, CEO for the Evangeline Area Council, said this year's auction was the most successful ever and thanked the many sportsman and sponsors who support the character-building programs of the Boy Scouts.
Party Girl crooned some holiday tunes at the recent "Sing for Your Supper" party hosted by Marty and Janice LeBlanc. Pianist Kurt Boudreaux hammered out some jazzy holiday numbers while guests and their children requested their favorites. The highlight of the evening was a hearty rendition of "Twelve Days of Christmas." Party Girl led the girls on the odd numbers, while the boys sang the even ones. We gals sang prettier, but the guys had us beat on volume. Couldn't leave the party until I got the recipe for Maureen Veazey's crawfish appetizer!
One of Party Girl's favorite stops on her holiday party list is Dr. Rachelle Meaux's annual Christmas event at her lovely home. An exceptionally detailed Christmas Village graced the fireplace mantle, with other beautiful holiday decorations spilling over into rooms of the house denoting a theme of family and friends. Delicious food, holiday refreshments and a wide assortment of desserts never ran out during the night. Among the special guests who enjoyed the evening were Emmett and Dottie Gauthier and Debbie and Robert Mahony. Late in the evening, one of Lafayette's local favorites, "Marilyn Monreaux," made a surprise Christmas visit, singing "Santa Baby" to special gentlemen in attendance. After that entertainment, others felt inspired to join in the Christmas spirit by kicking off their shoes and dancing the night away.
There will soon be a whole lot of shakin’ going on at Benny’s Sportshack Supplement Depot, a new concept by Opelousas native Benny Nele. Located at 2002 Johnston St., the supplement shop, smoothie bar and café, featuring hot off the press paninis and wraps, plans to open in late May.
Philip deMahy Sr., a once respected New Iberia ad exec, was sentenced May 2 to spend the next two years (he faced up to 100 years) in a state penitentiary after state and federal investigators found dozens of images depicting children engaged in lewd sexual acts on his personal computer.
