Although the temps were near freezing on Saturday, March 8, die-hard runners came out in full force to support the 4th Annual Fernewood 5K and Fun Run benefiting Acadiana Youth Inc. Development Director Erin Spisak and Event Chair Dr. Bryan Sibley worked closely to make sure this event ran as smoothly as the runners themselves. Overall male winner was Kevin Castille with a time of 17:33, and overall female winner was Alice Aissi, who came in at 20:22. Warm bread was provided by Great Harvest Bread, and hot coffee was brewed up by CC’s Coffeehouse. Lowe’s graciously supplied the water and Gatorade, and DJ Troy Grow’s hot beats definitely put pep in everyone’s step! Even those who fancied a much-needed muscle rub were obliged by the staff of Dr. David Barczyk. None of this could be possible without the generosity of their sponsors: Ahrens Investment Partners, Lafayette General Medical Center, Landry Harris & Co., Longman Russo Law Corporation, Lourdes Foundation Inc. and the families of Fernewood. Kudos also to the Cajun Road Runners Club for providing course management, and all of those very special volunteers who came out to lend a helping hand — even if it was covered with a warm glove!

One good race deserves another, and Saturday, March 15, marked Acadiana’s 9th annual Susan Komen Race for the Cure in downtown Lafayette. Due to the support of the many participants, volunteers and sponsors such as Firefly Digital and 99.1 KXKC, Komen Acadiana is awarding $227,190 in grants in 2008 for local breast cancer education, screening, and treatment programs to Miles Perret Cancer Services, Lafayette Community Health Care Clinic, Opelousas General Health System, Acadiana Medical Research Foundation, Acadia Council on Aging and Faith House. KXKC had more than 50 participants and $2,000 in contributions in the race. For true inspiration, look no further than Carlie Richard of Firefly Digital, who walked the race while nine months pregnant. And for all of you who are wondering, she gave birth to a beautiful baby boy a week later. You go girl!
