Party Girl 09.23.09

The Independent Weekly staff can wield a bat as well as a pen, as we showed off our athletic prowess at Comeaux field against The Krewe of Doom on a recent Friday evening. Branding ourselves the “Independent Weeklings,” we managed to overtake our worthy adversaries with a narrow win at 7-6. Of course, it would have been 7-4 if our first baseman, staff writer Nathan Stubbs, hadn’t thought that it was three outs (when it was really two, OK so we were playing extra innings to let ’em catch up, but still) as he held the ball in one hand and his drink in the other and bantered with the first base coach while two Krewe of Doomers crossed home plate. However, it should be noted that he never spilled a drop of his beverage in the process, so kudos Mr. Stubbs! He knows what’s important. The Krewe of Doom may have left with bruised egos, but Party Girl left with a bruised and banged up knee that stopped throbbing after a few celebratory beers…and shots. The Krewe of Doom has since vowed revenge on the Weeklings. Bring it on Doom! (And if anyone else dares to challenge us, contact our fearless leader, coach/manager Walter Pierce, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. OOOOHHHH..... extra innings our (______)!U guys just wanted to call it quits after an early 7: and Kudos to your staff in the pics, but what of those ringers?!
Yes, a re-match, with a full 9 innings, is indeed in order....Bring it.

Agreed with above statement that IND wanted to call it quits after 7; a full game is 9; the Krewe of Doom can honestly say that everyone who played on our team has been inducted to the Krewe through our initiation ceremony...not sure how it works with the IND, but evidently if you are related to someone on the staff and you are 6'3" 285 lb. center for the Cajuns you are eligible...and how many of the girls pictured actually played? Just curious...

Such sore losers. The fact is, Pud and I agreed before play began that it would be a seven-inning game. At the end of seven, leading 7-3 and overcome with pity since we had led the entire game, the Weeklings agreed, in the spirit of sportsmanship and pleased by the game-long spanking administered to the ruby-red buttocks of our friendly adversaries, to play on.
As for the composition of our team, it more truly represents a "company" team than the loosely confederated gaggle of popinjays and coxcombs we took to the woodshed a few weeks ago.
Now, sirs and madams, let us schedule a rematch!

Thanks, Walter, for being such a gracious winner.

I don't think there is any question that there will be a rematch...although we may have to rethink our team and make it more "company" and call up some of our UL softball friends...

The Krewe of Doom may not be the most victorious team of all time- but we have fun, we love to play and we’ve inspired others to get organized. For that, we’re the MF’n champs- even if that trophy never gets made and the people at the paper don't print our names under our pictures and call us dandy fops in print.
For the record, Walter is indeed correct. Before the game began, we agreed to play 7 and then the IND Weeklings graciously suggested that we play a few more innings. Of course, one team must win and the other must lose. It’s true- the Krewe of Doom didn’t win and the IND did. The factors that led to this outcome don't include one team having more testicles or a huge football player. Both teams displayed lots of skill and plenty of errors. The IND scored more points and so they won. I believe that a good time was had by all- even if the hindsight by Doom isn't all rosy. We competed in the spirit of good fun and community that was our original intent. A spectacle was indeed created and witnessed by the lucky few in attendance.
Even though we lost, we all won because we made our own fun- carving something incredibly entertaining and fantastic out of nothing. We are the first two teams in what will hopefully be a really fun league- let’s not run the ship aground in the harbor by sore losing and pointed thesaurus use.
I encourage others to organize a coed group and challenge the IND Weeklings or Krewe of Doom or newest rival Team Win. Skill level should not be an obstacle and fun for everyone should be the outcome.

I submit to you all that we should let the bats do the talking. Okay Walter- When’s that rematch?

November 7: Krewe of Doom vs. Team Win

Thank you, Pudd. My earlier response to KOD and Doom was merely playful jest. I regret any misunderstanding. It's worth noting that our "ringer" is unavailable for play until after the football season. For the record, popinjay and coxcomb came from my mental list of reliable albeit infrequently used words, not a thesaurus. Perish the thought!
